Waterpolo Champion's League mens: 3rd Round - Group B

Saturday evening offered several interesting matches in the third round of fixtures for Group B of LEN Champions League. Champions Pro Recco welcomed Red Star from Belgrade. VK Jug was successful on their trip to Berlin, while Marseille likewise claimed what they came for in Bucharest. Waspo 98 brought the most eye-opening result in Hannover by ending the unbeaten run of OSC.

The most convincing teams on the night were CN Marseille and VK JUG from Dubrovnik who both beat their opponents by 8 goal differences to share third spot in the table having earned 6 points from 3 matches. Both greatly benefiting from the failure of OSC to secure their third win in the group amid drawing in Hannover with Waspo 98 arriving to only a point behind them on the table.

Jug from Dubrovnik outplayed Spandau in Germany, who managed to stay on level terms only until the second quarter after which the guests took the lead for 4:3 and stayed on top for the rest of the match. Going into half time with a five-goal lead (9:4), matters were practically taken care of for the Croatian coastal giants. Konstantinos Kakaris played fantastically with 5 goals to his name, alongside Marin Restović who scored 2 goals, and Nikola Dedović registering one.

CN Marseille proved why they were the favourites against Romanian club Steaua. Amid securing their second victory in a row in Bucharest with 14 goals to 6. The hosts stayed well on par with the visitors trailing a goal behind at the end of the second quarter (6-5). However, after half time the flood gates opened for the French side. The player with the highest contribution was from club captain, and Serbian veteran Andrija Prlainović, scoring 4 goals for Les Marseillaises.

German club Waspo 98 served a bucket of cold ice to Hungarian OSC. The visitors from Budapest couldn’t secure a third straight victory in Hannover on Saturday night. The hosts started the match strongly, with the first quarter ending in 4:2. The visitors improved their game at the start of the second quarter and managed to get into the lead by the end of the third quarter, holding a score of 9:7. The hosts however were determined to salvage something from this match and fought out a hard, but well-earned point with a final score of 12:12. Players of note were Darko Brguljan and Jorn Winkelhorst both scoring hattricks for the hosts, while for the visitors Zoltan Burian and Vince Vigvari both scored three goals each as well.

Red Star Belgrade suffered their second defeat in the Champions’ League group stages this season after losing in Italy to reigning European Champions Pro Recco, with a final score of 13 to 7 (4:3, 5:2, 2:1, 2:0). The red and whites stayed well in the contest for a solid 12 minutes, only to concede several goals in quick succession right before half-time to enable the champions to run away with the spoils.
