Player Interview Series: Jesse Koopman

Updated: May 21

We have taken the time to sit down with one of Netherlands's stars, Jesse. Check out some of the questions we asked him below:

1. When did you first realize that you could be a career waterpolo player and that you can turn your passion into your day job?

Of course it was always a dream when I was a young kid, but my first realization came when I was around 18 years old after I made my first transfer to Italy. It was my first professional contract and really until that moment, I was not sure if a professional waterpolo career would be the right one for me.

As they say the rest is history, and I am quite happy that I can still pursue my career in waterpolo the way I am.

2. Which challenges did you have to overcome to become the player you are today?

I think I had to overcome quite many challenges. Especially because holland is not the biggest waterpolo country. I always had to search for better/more professional environment to improve. Because I knew if I will stay in holland, I will never make it.

3. What motivates you the most about your profession as a waterpolo player?

I think every player has a dream to chase, and for me, chasing that dream is my biggest motivation. I strive to be the best player I can be every day, I play for my team and I play for my family.

4. What is the best piece of advice a coach has ever given you?

The best advice was actually not only related to my waterpolo career. It was:

"Try to be the better version of yourself than the day before. In and outside the water."

Waterpolo is a sport that creates not only players, but quality people, I believe at least. As such, that advice really stuck with me over the years.

5. Which other sports do you like to follow and do you have any other hobbies?

I’m following a lot of different sports. To many to mention but mostly football. We have a great football culture here in the Neterlands and it is quite an easy sport to keep up with!

6. Your message to Waterpolo Portal readers?

I hope everybody will enjoy the channel as much as I do.
